About Dr Ross

J. Mike Ross, Ph.D. (AKA: James Mike Ross)
Licensed Psychologist

After having earned a Ph.D. in counseling psychology and having completed an internship at the University of Texas at Austin, my wife and I became citizens of Texas and established residency in the Austin area! Once embedded into Awesome Austin, I established a private practice with an emphasis on the counseling of both individuals and couples.

When reflecting on my life's journey, I can relate easily to the words of the Robert Frost poem "The Road Not Taken":

Two roads diverged in a wood, and I--
I took the one less traveled by,
And that has made all the difference.

Becoming a psychologist was a mid-life career change for me. My undergraduate degree from the University of Tulsa was in electrical engineering. For over twenty years, I worked predominately in research and development in the corporate world. Although I had a passion for the technology and the creativity associated with engineering, I had an ever-growing interest in relationships. This curiosity was nurtured through mentoring individuals, the development of teams, management and leadership, and volunteer work in assisting individuals in overcoming adversity.

When the company with which I was employed merged with a far larger company, I faced a lay-off along with 89% of my co-workers closing the R & D facility where I worked. Within two months, I had two employment offers that were interested in my technical skills. However, this was the point when the two roads diverged in my life, and "I took the one less traveled by". Needing to obtain more formal education, I earned a master's degree from Oklahoma State University and a Ph.D. from the University of Oklahoma in counseling psychology.

My master's degree thesis research concerned the study of individuals who were experiencing divorce. I focused on the correlation among their life stressors and the importance of other relationships in their lives in regards to overcoming a divorce. I have gained expertise in helping individuals work through and ultimately overcome their divorce. During this research, I had the opportunity to visit with 102 individuals experiencing divorce, and their stories were heart-wrenching. From there, I have strived to include couples counseling experiences, training, and opportunities to be supervised by those recognized as effective in the counseling of couples. The training which I received in the counseling of couples was an important supplement to the excellent foundation I received in working with the counseling of individuals throughout my master's and Ph.D. education.

While conducting research for my Ph.D. dissertation, I designed a study to evaluate the counseling outcome of individuals experiencing a variety of life events including divorce, job loss, depression and anxiety, etc. I evaluated how relationships including family, friends, partner, therapist, and spirituality were correlated to counseling outcome. Having followed their progress over several months, this research was commensurate with my interest in relationships and effective counseling outcome.

Prior to establishing my private practice, I gained valuable experience as a counselor in community counseling centers including Family and Children's Services, Oklahoma State University Couples and Family Counseling Center, and the University of Oklahoma Counseling and Assessment Center and at three major universities including the University of Oklahoma, the University of Texas at Austin, and the University of North Carolina at Wilmington. During these positions, I provided counseling services for individuals, couples, and groups. I provided counseling assessment services, presentations, and consultation with faculty, staff, and individuals in strategic positions such as police and other first responders to disasters, and the Department of Human Services.
Since earning my Ph.D., I have completed advanced training in the counseling of couples with Dr. John Gottman and Dr. Julie Gottman. Internationally recognized, they are preeminent in their work with couples. Their approach has been shown to be effective and is based on scientific research that they and others have conducted over several decades.

My primary focus is assisting individuals and couples in my private practice. I have the opportunity to live my dream and passion through the privilege of working with individuals and couples. I took the road less traveled by, and that has made all the difference.
